02 Application engineering

Applications

01

Industrial main distribution

A main distribution board (MDB) receives the transformer supply and feeds production lines, motor control centres and plant services. Busbar loading, prospective short-circuit current and coordination between incoming and outgoing protection determine the electrical arrangement. Feeder access and spare ways should support maintenance and planned expansion.

02

Main distribution boards for buildings

In offices, hotels and campuses, the main distribution board supplies risers, floor distribution boards and large mechanical loads. The load schedule defines feeder duties, metering and circuit allocation. Multiple supplies require a defined transfer and interlocking scheme; room dimensions, cable routes and maintenance clearances govern the physical layout.

03

Extensions to existing distribution

New process equipment or additional building loads can require extra feeders or replacement of a main board. Existing drawings, fault levels, busbar interfaces and cable sizes must be checked before designing the extension. Available space, isolation arrangements and the agreed shutdown sequence shape how the new section connects.

04 Construction and options

Technical options

Panel function

Incoming and outgoing functions follow the single-line diagram.

Construction

Fixed and withdrawable units require different isolation and maintenance arrangements.

Protection information

Protection settings must be coordinated with the connected loads and upstream devices.

Cable entry

Busbar and cable routes must match the connection arrangement and available space.

Control mode

Control circuits define interlocks, status signals and switching sequences.

Enclosure requirement

Enclosure protection and internal separation must be documented for the proposed assembly.

Frequently asked questions

Low-Voltage Switchgear & Main Distribution Boards
What information is needed for a quotation?

Send the following project information: System voltage, frequency, current and short-circuit duty with duration. Single-line diagram, feeder schedule and spare circuits.

How does a main switchboard differ from a distribution board?

A main switchboard handles the incoming supply and main feeders. A distribution board groups downstream circuits serving an area or specific loads.

Which short-circuit data should I provide?

State the prospective fault current, required withstand duration and protection arrangement. These requirements must be checked against the proposed model's documentation.
