02 Application engineering

Applications

01

Industrial reactive power compensation

Motors and other inductive loads draw reactive power as well as active power. A capacitor bank supplies part of that demand near the distribution point. Measured load profiles, existing power factor and the target operating range determine compensation capacity; light-load conditions must be considered to avoid overcompensation.

02

Variable building and utility loads

Offices, retail facilities and central utilities have reactive demand that changes as equipment starts and stops. An automatic bank switches capacitor steps to follow that demand. Step sizes, controller sensing location and switching duty should match the load pattern, rather than being chosen from transformer capacity alone.

03

Networks with drives and UPS

Variable-speed drives, UPS and rectifiers introduce harmonics that must be assessed before adding capacitors. Network impedance and measured distortion guide the evaluation of resonance risk, detuned reactors and switching equipment. A capacitor bank is not an active harmonic filter; harmonic mitigation and reactive compensation require a coordinated design.

Electrical values entered here are requested requirements. Equipment ratings must match the selected model and its technical datasheet.

Harmonics affect capacitor loading and resonance risk. Measurements support the selection of detuned arrangements or a different compensation technology; a capacitor bank is not an APF or SVG.

04 Construction and options

Technical options

Control requirement

Fixed compensation suits a defined stable load; automatic stages follow changing demand.

Automatic steps

Stage sizes and switching sequence follow the reactive demand profile.

Protection information

Capacitor switching, protection and discharge require coordinated selection.

Harmonic information

Harmonics and resonance risk must be assessed before choosing reactors or filtering.

Control mode

Controller functions define stage control, indications and alarms.

Enclosure requirement

Component losses, ventilation and ambient conditions govern the thermal arrangement.

Frequently asked questions

Automatic Capacitor Banks
What information is needed for a quotation?

Send the following project information: Active demand, present and target power factor, and load profile. Harmonic measurements and existing compensation equipment.

When should an automatic capacitor bank be considered?

An automatic bank adjusts connected stages as reactive demand changes. The stage arrangement should follow measured operating conditions.

Why are harmonic measurements important?

Harmonics affect capacitor loading and resonance risk. Measurements support the selection of detuned arrangements or a different compensation technology; a capacitor bank is not an APF or SVG.
